Presents the normal process of speech and language development and the relationship to social, physical, psychological, and cognitive development. Addresses multicultural factors and influences. Reviews methods for screening these skills within the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant's scope of practice.
CSD A105 Phonetics for Speech-Language Pathology Assistants 2 Credits
Introduces the study of speech sounds used in the production of spoken language. Emphasizes sound to symbol transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), and the development of transcription speed and accuracy. Introduces anatomy and physiology of the speech mechanism for the purpose of describing speech sound production.
CSD A106 Anatomy & Physiology of Speech & Hearing for the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant 2 Credits
Explores the basic anatomy, physiology and neurology relevant to communication and swallowing. Focuses on the systems of respiration, phonation, articulation, and resonance.
CSD A201 Foundations of Communication Disorders 3 Credits
Examines common developmental and acquired speech, language and hearing disorders, including etiologies, characteristics, prevention, assessment and intervention. Considers multicultural communication differences. Describes the interdisciplinary nature of the field of communication disorders, particularly as it relates to educational, health and developmental settings.
CSD A211 Speech Disorders and Intervention for the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant 3 Credits
Focuses on intervention approaches and strategies that can be used with specific age groups across the lifespan. Provides instruction on interventions for articulation, phonological, fluency, voice and swallowing/feeding disorders in individual and group settings.
Prerequisites: CSD A104 with a minimum grade of C or concurrent enrollment and CSD A105 with a minimum grade of C or concurrent enrollment and CSD A201 with a minimum grade of C or concurrent enrollment.
CSD A212 Language Disorders and Intervention for the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant 3 Credits
Focuses on intervention approaches and strategies for developmental and acquired language disorders across the lifespan.
Prerequisites: CSD A104 with a minimum grade of C and CSD A201 with a minimum grade of C.
CSD A213 Clinical Methods, Documentation and Professional Issues for the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant 2 Credits
Covers the development and use of therapeutic materials based on knowledge of communication, cognitive and swallowing disorders as well as developmental and behavioral models. Includes various approaches to documentation. Explores the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant's scope of practice, ethical considerations across practice settings, licensure and registration, workplace skills, universal precautions, and culturally sensitive practice.
Prerequisites: CSD A211 with a minimum grade of C and CSD A212 with a minimum grade of C.
CSD A220 Communication Disorders in Low Incidence Populations for the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant 2 Credits
Introduces intervention strategies for communication disorders found in low incidence populations (such as craniofacial anomalies, hearing disorders, genetic and metabolic disorders, and syndromes).
Prerequisites: CSD A211 with a minimum grade of C and CSD A212 with a minimum grade of C.
CSD A221 Assistive & Augmentative Communication for the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant 2 Credits
Explores the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) terminology, symbols, application of low versus high tech devices and intervention. Includes overview of populations using AAC and issues of motor and sensory impairments.
Prerequisites: CSD A211 with a minimum grade of C and CSD A212 with a minimum grade of C.
CSD A295 Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Practicum 3 Credits
Supervised clinical experience in health care, clinic, agency or school settings. Addresses development of clinical skills, including professionalism, screening, implementation of prescribed therapy plans, data recording and documentation within the scope of practice as an SLPA. Emphasis on developing competencies for ethical and effective Speech-Language Pathology Assistant practice.
Special Note: Must be completed twice in at least two different clinical settings for the major requirements of the Associate of Applied Science in Speech-Language Pathology Assistant.
Prerequisites: CSD A213 with a minimum grade of C or concurrent enrollment.
CSD A301 Anatomy and Physiology of Speech and Hearing 3 Credits
Examines the anatomy and physiology of the systems involved in human communication and swallowing: respiration, phonation, articulation/resonance, nervous system, auditory system, and mastication/ deglutition. Examines the relationship between anatomy, physiology and disorders of communication.

CSD A302 Phonetics 3 Credits
Explores the production, classification and transcription of speech sounds. Develops skills in transcription of speech at the vowel, consonant and single-word level as well as connected speech. Differentiates speech disorders from dialectic variations.

CSD A303 Language Development Across the Lifespan 3 Credits
Explores the normal acquisition of language. This includes the components; the perceptual, social and cognitive bases; theories of language development; and how language evolves from infancy through adulthood. Also explores the impact of second language learning and cultural influences on language development.

CSD A401 Phonology and Articulation Development and Disorders 3 Credits
Explores articulation and phonological development as well as disorders in relation to acquisition, multicultural factors, appraisal, differential diagnosis and remediation.

CSD A402 Audiology 3 Credits
Explores normal hearing, causes and effects of impaired hearing, hearing testing procedures, and management of hearing loss.

CSD A403 Aural Rehabilitation 3 Credits
Integrates the science of hearing loss identification and management with specific emphasis on the strategies speech-language and hearing professionals use in providing support and counseling. Also develops habilitation/rehabilitation plans to maximize auditory skills and promote communication success for children and adults.

Explores the physiological and acoustic correlates of the speech production mechanism. Introduces speech science theory, instrumentation and measurement.

CSD A411 Neurological Foundations of Speech and Hearing 3 Credits
Explores neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, including current research of nervous system structures and functions important for speech and language. Critically analyzes current theories of the neurophysiology utilized in speech and language.

CSD A695A Beginning Internship in Speech-Language Pathology 1-8 Credits
Supervised beginning internship in speech-language pathology in the UAA Speech-Language Clinic. Emphasizes development of clinical competencies in the areas of Evaluation, Intervention, and Interaction and Personal Qualities as defined by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association 2014 Standards and Implementation Procedures for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology.

CSD A695B Advanced Internship in Speech-Language Pathology 1-4 Credits
Provides supervised internship experiences in speech-language pathology in a variety of settings with clients/patients across the lifespan who experience diverse communication and/or swallowing disorders. Emphasizes development of clinical competencies in the areas of Evaluation, Intervention, and Interaction and Personal Qualities as defined by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association 2014 Standards and Implementation Procedures for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology.
Special Note: May be repeated for a maximum of 16 credits.
